Inferno
Purgatorio
Paradiso
Dante Alighieri
As we descend with Dante through the depths of Hell and are elevated to the heights of Heaven, we clearly see true principles which many ancient religions employ to govern a Just Society among their adherents. While most of the images Dante teaches are of those suffering for not abiding by the tenants of a Just Society, we also get a glimpse at what the hereafter is like in the glory of an eternally Just Society in the presence of God. The teachings of ancient religions share a dismal view of the afterlife for those who do not abide the will of the gods and a favorable hope for those who do.
But, as for thee, I think and deem it well
Thou take me for thy guide, and pass with me
Through an eternal place and terrible (Hell,1:112-115)
